Thomas Lee Mattox, Sr., the third of twelve children born to J. T. and Bessie Lee Mattox in Elbert County, Georgia.
Mattox graduated in 1966 from Blackwell Memorial High School where he was a member of the track team and the school chorus. A faithful and active member of Antioch Baptist Church.
After graduating from Athens Tech in 1967 where he learned a trade in welding,
Mattox was drafted into the U. S. Army serving as a member with an elite team called the “Soul Patrol” in Vietnam. Initially, a machine gunner with the patrol and later moved to rear security.
When the tour of duty ended in the military, Mattox started matriculating at SSC
(now SSU) in the Fall of 1969, majoring in Sociology (Early Childhood Development.) Graduating in 1974 with a B.S. Degree.
While at SSC, Mattox was a member of the Tiger Baseball team, where he was a pitcher and sang in the SSC Collegiate Choir.
Mattox has a passion for the up building and maintaining the high standard of excellence at dear ole SSU. He shows his loyalty by attending football, baseball, softball and basketball games. He has logged many out of town miles while traveling
to support the football team since 1974. Honored in 1987-88 as a Loyal Supported Fan.
Mattox is a Lifetime Member since 2010 of the National Alumni Association, and a
member of the Jacksonville Chapter of the SSU Alumni Association. Retired in 2002 from the State of Georgia Dept of Juvenile Justice.
In 1978 Mattox joined the Prince Hall Masons and in 2013 became an Omar Temple 21 Shriner. He serves with the motor patrol in different events.
Mattox married Almisha Surrency in 1970 and to this union one child Thomas Lee Mattox, Jr. was born in 1971. Mattox has one grandson, Aaron Javon, affectionately known as “AJ”. Thomas Jr. known as Bubba, was commissioned in the United States Navy in 1993 as an Ensign and retired in 2013 as a Lt. Commander.
